Monnina insignis

This species illustrates many of the characters of subgenus Monninopsis which is endemic to northern Brazil. The habit of the two species that comprise this subgenus is strictly herbaceous. They lack extra floral nectaries. The internode distance between the pinkish flowers is not so great as in subgenus Pterocarya. The posterior sepals are connate as in many species of subgenus Monnina. The posterior petal is deeply lobate, becoming tricleft. The staminal sheath is strictly connate, as opposed to those of the other two subgenera which show a transition from apically-free to partially connate.
